Wapentapijt van koning Willem III, stadhouder van de Nederlanden, en koningin Mary Stuart II

Jan Cobus, c. 1689 - c. 1694

Tapestry, probably after a design by Daniël Marot, 1689-1694. On the tapestry, in the centre, are the arms of England, Scotland, Ireland and the lion from the ancestral coat of arms of William III. Around this is the text 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' (Shamed be he who thinks evil of it), the motto of the Order of the Garter, England's foremost order of chivalry. Above the crown, borne by two mythological figures, is the monogram RWMR of the king and queen: Rex William and Mary Regina. The probable designer of the tapestry - Daniël Marot - was regularly commissioned as a court artist by William and Mary. When Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes in 1685, Marot and thousands of other French Protestants fled to the Netherlands.
