Target gun used by the Guild of Arquebusiers in Amsterdam

attributed to Jacobus Jaspers, 1675 - 1699

The support stand on this target gun is in the form of a taloned eagle’s claw grasping a ball, a reference to the Guild of Arquebusiers in Amsterdam. Civic guardsmen would grasp the support with their left hand, while pressing their left elbow into their side. The gun has a tinder lock, which uses a piece of smouldering dried fungus, rather than a slow match, to ignite the powder.

  • Description

    Doelgeweer of doelroer. Het geelkoperen slot vertoont sporen van vroeger verguldsel; de slotplaat is afgezet met koper; de pan steunt op een basis in de vorm van een zeeschelp. De loop is achterop geribbeld en gegroefd; de vierkante tromp heeft de vorm van een Corinthische zuil; het vizier en de korrel zijn van geelkoper. De kolf is ingelegd met parelmoer en in reliëf gesneden met lofwerk, slangen en dolfijnen; de steunklos voor de trekkerbeugel eindigt in een vogelklauw rondom een aan de onderzijde afgeplatte bal. Afgezien van de ladekap van koehoorn, is het beslag van voorheen verguld geelkoper en bestaat uit een schroefplaat gegraveerd met een naam, en een kolfplaat met een spoor over de gehele greep; de laadstok is voorzien van een ijzeren kap.
