Crucifixion

attributed to workshop of Palardin, Nicolas II, attributed to workshop of Fiacre, Martin, c. 1560

This Crucifixion is carved from a deep black marble found only in Wallonia (Belgium). The Palardin-Fiacre family of sculptors (originally from Lombardy), who were active in Liège, specialized in reliefs made from this hard-towork material. Effects of light and shadow are difficult to achieve in the uniform dark stone and the subtle details of the depiction only come to life with proper illumination.
