Badge of the Guild of Saint George in Breda

anonymous, c. 1500

At the centre of this civic guard badge is Saint George, who has killed a dragon with his lance. He was the patron saint of crossbowmen. He is flanked by two coats of arms: at left those of the Lords of Breda and on the right the arms of the town.

Description
Draagteken, gedeeltelijk verguld, aan boven- en onderzijde een ketting. In een ovaal medaillon met opstaande lijst is, tegen een blankgepolijste achtergrond, "en ronde bosse" de figuur van Sint Joris met de draak geplaatst. Aan de rand twee schilden, met de wapens van de stad Breda en van de Heren van Nassau-Breda met de kwartieren van Nassau en Vianden, aangebracht op een voluut in takvorm en gedeeltelijk over een kroon aan de voet daarvan. De velden waren vermoedelijk geëmailleerd, hetgeen valt af te leiden uit het ruwe metaaloppervlak.
