Two fragments of a clay mould

anonymous, c. 1425 - c. 1450

Religious statuettes were produced on a large scale in the Netherlands using pipe clay (white-fired clay). The sculptors formed the statues using moulds such as these and then fired them. This two-piece mould was used for a statuette of the Virgin and Child of the type shown alongside.
