anonymous, c. 1755 - c. 1765

All the elements of this cabinet are curved, as if the entire piece of furniture were moving. The carved ornament - a combination of plants and flowers and abstract forms - reinforces that impression. Only rarely in the Netherlands did such a large and massive piece of furniture manage to express the Rococo style so perfectly. Perhaps this cabinet was designed by a sculptor and not by a cabinetmaker.

  • Description

    Kabinet van eikenhout, belijmd met noten- en wortelnotenhout, bestaande uit een boven- en een onderkast, beide met sterk gewelfde vlakken en in horizontale doorsnede met S-vormige curves. Ronde hoekstijlen; gegolfde onder-, midden- en bovenlijsten. De gebeeldhouwde ornamenten bestaan uit rocailles en plantaardige motieven. Verder staat de kast op zogenaamde "opschuimende" poten. De scharnieren en de sleutelgaten worden verhuld door er over heen "groeiende" bloemtakken. Door dit alles werkt het gehele meubel als één ornamentale vorm.
