St John of Nepomuk on a Cloud

Meissener Porzellan Manufaktur, 1731

This figurine portrays the 14th-century Bohemian martyr John of Nepomuk. It dates from shortly after Nepomuk was canonized in 1729. Johann Gottlieb Kirchner made the model of this figure. Even though he only worked at the factory for a few years, his designs were defining. He made human figures and groups, as well as large animal figures for the Japanese Palace in Dresden.
