Crucifix

The theme of Christ dying on the cross originated just before the year 1000. Until then, theologians had argued at great length about whether Christ died as a man or as a god. This early statue emphasizes the human aspect of Christ’s suffering through his closed eyes, his drooping head and, above all, his bleeding wounds.

    Het hoofd van Christus hangt iets voorover en naar links, de knieën zijn even gebogen, de rechtervoet is op de linker gehecht met een nagel. Het gescheiden haar valt in tressen op de schouders, doch laat een deel van de oren vrij; de lendendoek is op de rechterheup geknoopt en loopt van achteren af. Op de slapen een lichte uitholling voor de doornenkroon.
