The Annunciation

The angel Gabriel is telling the Virgin that she will conceive a child. The figures’ slim proportions and long drapery folds typify the so-called ‘International Gothic’, an elegant style that flourished during the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. This figure group was made to flank the high altar of the church of San Francesco in Pienza (Tuscany).

    Maria staat op een achtzijdige plint op het rechterbeen en heeft het gebogen linker iets terzijde. Zij houdt de rechterhand als in afwachting gebarend ter hoogte van de borst iets voor zich uit en heeft in de linker een boek. Het even naar links gewende hoofd heeft golvend haar en met een band omwonden vlechten. Zij gaat gekleed in een lang gewaad met nauwsluitende mouwen, dat valt tot over de punten van haar schoeisel en dat onder de borst door een band is samengesnoerd. Halsuitsnijding en mouwen vertonen een versierde rand, de riem heeft geschilderde ronde versieringen (als metalen schijfjes).
