Chest

anonymous, c. 1550 - c. 1599

Cassoni – chests used for storing expensive fabrics – had an important representational function. Owners could use them to show off their wealth and social standing. This was why such chests were often decorated with the family coat of arms. It is not known which family’s arms are depicted on this chest.

    Kist van notenhout op aan de voorzijde overhoeks geplaatste klauwpoten. Het front is op de hoeken en in het midden verkropt en vertoont in het midden van een vlak veld een wapenschild in cartouche, gehouden door staande putti met afgewend hoofd. Op de hoeken voluutpilasters met een parelrand in het midden en Ionische kapitelen. Het deksel draagt een aan de binnenzijde hol kussen. De zijkanten hebben vlakke velden.
