Een Nederlander in de wildernis

De ontdekkingsreizen van Robert Jacob Gordon (1743-1795) in Zuid-Afrika. Author Luc Panhuysen. 32 colour illustrations, 192 pages, paperback

In the 18th century Robert Jacob Gordon, a Dutchman of Scottish descent, was a well-known person. He undertook long journeys exploring the still untouched wilderness of southern Africa. This book reveals the man and his expeditions. His journeys and excursions produce a colourful record of the “Age of Enlightenment”, when colonialism merged with an enormous hunger for knowledge. Gordon was close with leading scientists as well as domestic chiefs. Besides being a captain of the Dutch East India Company and a diplomat, he also was a botanist, zoologist, cartographer and anthropologist. The Atlas Gordon, his fabulous collection of maps and drawings, is part of the Rijksmuseum collection.
