8th International Conference of Art Libraries

For the 8th time, the international network of art libraries will come together to hold its biannual conference, this year at the Rijksmuseum on 4 and 5 October 2018.

Scope

The two-day programme is covering a large spectrum of topics, ranging from the ongoing project Art Discovery Group Catalogue to questions around Resource Sharing and Linked Open Data. Speakers from all over the world will give presentations on the topics’ various aspects as well as on new projects, events and initiatives going on in art and museum libraries and information services. The conference is both a meeting of the partner libraries joining the Art Discovery Group Catalogue project and an event focusing on topics around art and museum information of rather general interest.

bibliotheek Cuypers Library, RijksmuseumThe starting point of this community-driven conference format, born in 2004, was the necessity to bring together the growing group of European art libraries that have been participating in the ‘Virtual Catalogue or Art History’, launched in Germany in 1999. Over the first years, this federated solution in terms of technique and maintenance for connecting library catalogues, developed into an international cooperation network with a steadily growing number of partners. At the first conference in 2004, this group consisted already of 44 member libraries from four European countries. In the following years, the number of partner libraries grew to more than 90 libraries in 14 countries on four continents. When in 2012 the virtual catalogue, meanwhile called ‘artlibraries.net’, was replaced by a more up to date discovery solution, based on WorldCat powered by OCLC, the group of participating libraries changed both in number and composition. However, the before mentioned cooperation network remained.

Topics

One of the central topics in all seven previous meetings of the last fourteen years was the prospect on future developments in librarianship in general and in the art sector in particular. Also the upcoming conference in Amsterdam will focus on related questions, concerning for instance resource sharing in terms of global collaboration and developments in linked open data for the benefit of art history. The conference is a forum not only for correspondent presentations but first and foremost for discussions and inspiring visits to local participants.

Thursday 4 October
Presentations about the project Art Discovery Group Catalogue, Resource Sharing and Linked Open Data in art libraries. The day ends with drinks before we proceed to the canal boats in front of the Rijksmuseum for an evening canal cruise with dinner passing through the historic city centre of Amsterdam.

Friday 5 October
Lighting talks (morning session) and excursions to the libraries of the Van Gogh Museum (which moved to a new location recently), the Stedelijk Museum and the Rijksmuseum.

Call for Papers

The aim of the conference is to bring together information specialists, librarians, publishers, students and scholars in the field of art and architecture, discuss the progress of the Art Discovery Group Catalogue and recent developments that challenge the art information profession. The three main issues are the evaluation and future developments of the Art Discovery Group Catalogue, linked open data and resource sharing in art information. We are also soliciting proposals for 10 minute lightning talks to be presented on the morning of the second conference day. These can be how-to sessions, facilitated discussions, or traditional presentations.

Abstracts should describe original, unpublished work. The abstract word limit is 500 words (no images). The final presentations and the abstracts will be made available on the Artdiscovery.net website after the conference.

Registration & prices

The registration fee includes refreshments and lunches on both days, and a complimentary 2-day entrance to the Rijksmuseum. There is a separate fee for the evening canal cruise and dinner.

The deadline for Early Bird registration is 1 September 2018 23:59 UTC. You must register and pay before this date to receive the Early Bird ticket. After this date, all new and unpaid registrations will be charged the Late fee.

Regular participant

  • Early-bird fee 2 day ticket: € 100
  • Late fee 2 day ticket: € 140

Ticket for the canal tour and dinner on 4 October: € 30

Student participant

  • Student 2 day ticket: € 75 (limited tickets available)
  • Students have to send proof of their student status to the conference e-mail address before purchasing their ticket.
