The 19th century is the century where the modern world comes into being. The Netherlands becomes a kingdom for the first time, the Dutch East Indies becomes a profitable colony, Belgium secedes, photography is discovered and the first railway line is built. Meanwhile, a style of painting develops that is much freer than before: the most famous examples are the The Hague School, which includes painters such as Mauve and the Maris brothers, Breitner as well as Vincent van Gogh.
