The holy mountain

From the series What’s new in the collection

This Calvary, barely 60cm tall, is the work of one of the greatest innovators in medieval art. His name was Claus ‘Claes’ Sluter (1340-1405), and he came from the Dutch city of Haarlem. He introduced an unprecedented level of realism to sculpture in the run-up to 1400, and he is regarded as the founder of Dutch sculpture.

Acquired with the support of the Mondriaan Fund, the Vereniging Rembrandt (due to their Fonds van de Utrecht & Gooi Cirkel, and Themafonds Beeldhouwkunst and Schoufour-Martin Fonds) as well as anonymous donations through the Rijksmuseum Fund.
