The Haarlem artist Gerrit Berckheyde (1638-1698) is renowned for painting cityscapes that accurately reflect the reality of his time. Despite his high production rate and a great deal of repetition, he maintained an exceptionally high quality – as in the case of The Town Hall on Dam Square, Amsterdam.
