Commemorative Cloth for Surinamese Independence

From the series In detail

Commemorative Cloth for Surinamese Independence, Ch. J. Abboud/Jeruzalem Bazaar , cloth, 1975, Gift of M. Schilder, Amsterdam

On 25 November 1975, Suriname became independent, bringing an end to more than three centuries of colonial domination and exploitation.

Since then, Suriname celebrates Srefidensi Dey every year on 25 November: a day of freedom and national pride. On this day, women in Suriname often wear colorful angisas, traditional headscarves through which they express their feelings using specific folding techniques. This headscarf, designed by Ch.J. Abboud, was specially made for the proclamation of independence in 1975.
