The Orangerie; or the Dutch Cupid reposing, after the fatigues of Planting, James Gillray (1757-1815), etching, hand coloured, 1796
On 18 January 1795 the Dutch leader William V, Prince of Orange, fled from the advancing French army to England. The sensationalist British press claimed William spent his years in exile engaged in a series of amorous adventures. He is shown here resting after a hard day’s ‘work’.
