Van Bengalen
From the series SlaveryVan Bengalen. To the Dutch, this sounds like a last name, but it’s not. The name refers to the group of people from around the Bay of Bengal who were enslaved by the Dutch East India Company or its employees and transported to Batavia, the Banda Islands in the Moluccas and the Cape in what is now South Africa. Vinod Subramaniam will tell you more about these people.
