The Rijksmuseum holds around 2700 Japanese prints, dating primarily from the 17th and 18th century. Among the highlights of this collection are the sketchbook, travel album and print Red Fuji by the renowned Japanese artist Hokusai. There are also prints by other famous artists, such as Hiroshige and Yoshitoshi, as well as exquisite nature prints, for instance, of a subtly rendered white egret standing on one leg in the rain, by an unknown printmaker. The group of Chinese prints is very modest in scope (only 23 sheets).

The Rijksmuseum also owns various scroll paintings, painted screens and more than 400 Indian miniatures. Ranging from refined portraits of shahs and maharajas to images of court life with elephant fights, these tiny paintings showcase India’s rich culture.
