Dutch painter and lithographer Nicolaas Pieneman (1809-1860) was a son of artist Jan Willem Pieneman. Taught by his father, he later studied at Amsterdam’s Academy of Fine Arts. He specialised in painting recent historical events. He was a friend of the Dutch king Willem II and painted numerous portraits of members of the royal family.
