Ship’s model of the Prins Willem

The real Prins Willem left the harbour of Middelburg in 1651 for its maiden voyage to the East Indies. The ship sailed to Batavia (Jakarta) a total of five times before sinking – with no survivors – on its return home in 1662. The rudder is flanked by a city view of Middelburg, above which are the logo of the Dutch East India Company and a portrait of Prince William II.

Explanatory note

Het originele schip werd in 1649 door de Zeeuwse kamer van de VOC in Middelburg op stapel gezet. Tijdens de slag bij Duins in oktober 1652 was de Prins Willem onderdeel van 's Lands Vloot. Als koopvaardijschip maakte de Prins Willem vijftien reizen tussen Europa en Azië. Op 11 februari 1662 verging het schip bij het eiland Brandon in de Indische Oceaan tijdens de terugreis naar Europa.
