Man’s jacket

anonymous, 1920 - 1940

This jacket alludes to the fleetingness of life: according to an ancient Japanese concept, man is nothing but a skeleton covered with skin. The skeletons dancing and making music seem to mock the beauty of the two lovely women. They are depicted in a circular snowflake shape, a motif also signifying transience.
