‘The Premises of Mietje, the Model, at Jonge Roelensteeg’

Christiaan Andriessen (1775-1846), point of brush and grey ink, with grey wash, over a sketch in pencil, c. 1805-1806

Mietje was Andriessen’s regular model. What she did at her ‘premises’ at Jonge Roelensteeg is not known, but people were sometimes caught in this street for indecent behaviour. Mietje could only have been the 25-year-old Maria Bont, who died from a seizure on Friday, 30 September 1808. Andriessen recorded the moment he received notice of this tragedy in a drawing on view elsewhere in this gallery.
