Adam van Vianen’s ewer of 1614 figures prominently among the silver treasures being offered to the Roman conqueror Scipio in this painting. This piece was so strange and unique, that painters used it to conjure up unknown worlds from the distant past. No other work of art was painted as often during the 17th century as this ewer.
