Figures in a Courtyard behind a House, Pieter de Hooch, c. 1663 - c. 1665

Figures in a Courtyard behind a House, Pieter de Hooch, c. 1663 - c. 1665

olieverf op doek, h 60cm × w 45.7cm. More details

In his Delft period, De Hooch turned to a new subject, namely brightly lit figures in a back garden. The people depicted in this scene seem somewhat out of place and could just as easily be found in a dimly lit tavern. Judging by the flirtatious glance cast by the galant, or suitor, at the tipsy girl, seduction is in the air.
