Portrait of Maria Rey, Ferdinand Bol, 1650

oil on canvas, h 118cm × w 96.5cm × d 7cm More details

Maria Rey and Roelof Meulenaer married in 1649. This may have been the reason for having both of their portraits painted. Maria and Roelof’s black clothing might look sober, but in fact it is made of silk and was thus very expensive. Also costly are Maria’s pearls, rings, and bracelets. The fan in her right hand is equally exclusive, a true status symbol.
