Portrait of Louis Napoleon, King of Holland, Charles Howard Hodges, 1809
The first king of the Netherlands was a Frenchman, Louis Napoleon. The King took his office very seriously. He championed the interests of the Dutch people –to the great annoyance of his brother, Napoleon, who forced him to abdicate the throne in 1810. Hodges initially portrayed the King with his left hand holding a ceremonial baton, but later painted this over. If you look closely, you can still see traces of it.
