The Flagellation, Luca di Tommè, c. 1365

The Flagellation, Luca di Tommè, c. 1365

tempera on panel, h 39cm × w 30cm. More details

Like many small paintings of the period, this came from a series of predella panels formerly on the base of a large altarpiece. Such panels often showed the Virgin and Child accompanied by a few standing saints. Sometimes, however, artists had more freedom in the choice and handling of predella scenes, while the main altarpiece itself was usually fairly conventional.
