Darius Marching to the Battle of Issus, workshop of Apollonio di Giovanni, c. 1450 - c. 1455
Apollonio di Giovanni was one of the most prominent cassone specialists in Florence. Cassoni (chests) were often produced in pairs, mostly on the occasion of marriages, with depictions of heroic deeds. Here, the Persian ruler Darius is shown going to battle against Alexander the Great. A lost companion panel would have shown Alexander’s victory.
