Girl in a White Kimono, George Hendrik Breitner, 1894

Girl in a White Kimono, George Hendrik Breitner, 1894

oil on canvas, h 59cm × w 57cm × d 11cm. More details

Breitner made a small sketch of this composition in a letter to the painter Willem Witsen requesting that this ‘Japanese woman’ be sold to someone for 500 guilders. Breitner is known to have breached his contract with Van Wisselingh on several occasions. This painting came into the possession of Mr and Mrs Drucker-Fraser in a roundabout way. They ultimately bequeathed it to the Rijksmuseum, the first ‘kimono girl’ in a public collection.
