Portrait of Maurice, Prince of Orange, Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt, c. 1613 - c. 1620
On the death of William of Orange in 1584, his son Maurice was appointed stadtholder, the most important position in the Dutch Republic. In 1590 Maurice was also given command of the armed and naval forces. Maurice (1567-1625) is portrayed wearing the gilded and engraved ceremonial armour that the States-General presented to him for his victory at the Battle of Nieuwpoort (1600).
