White-throated Toucan, Aert Schouman, 1748

aquarel, over een zeer lichte schets in potlood, kaderlijn in bruine inkt, h 482mm × w 319mm. More details

Versatile artist Aert Schouman ranks among the best watercolour painters of the 18th century. And his watercolours of birds and plants are his finest works. He generally painted birds, like this majestic whitethroated toucan from eastern North America, from mounted specimens. Collecting live and mounted birds, especially exotic species, became a popular hobby in the Netherlands during the 18th century.
