Lion Resting, Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn, after c. 1660 - 1664

pen, h 122mm × w 212mm. More details

Artists often depended on images by other artists for information about the appearance of exotic animals. Occasionally rare creatures were shown at fairs and markets, brought over from distance places by sailors. It is uncertain where Rembrandt saw this lion, but its bony body is so lifelike, and achieved with just a few broad strokes, that it was clearly drawn from life.
