Ernst Casimir, Count of Nassau-Dietz, wore this riding cloak at the Siege of Roermond in 1632. He was Stadtholder of Friesland and one of the most important Dutch army commanders. Although Roermond was retaken, it remained in Dutch hands a mere five years before it was reconquered by the Spanish. Only in 1814 was Roermond definitively established as Dutch.
