Chest with porcelain bottles, Anonymous, c. 1680 - c. 1700
To maintain good trade relations in Asia, the VOC headquarters in Batavia needed a constant supply of appropriate diplomatic gifts. The little Japanese bottles in this chest contained aromatic oils. The VOC presented such chests to various Asian rulers. These oils were popular in Asia and were used to perfume bathwater, or as a body rub. The Company’s logo is found on the bottom of each bottle.
