Silver cabinet, Jan Adolf Hillebrand, 1844

oak (wood), h 223.2cm × w 126cm × d 56cm. More details

The young cabinetmaker Jan Hillebrand displayed this Gothic Revival cabinet as a showpiece at the 1844 exhibition of decorative arts in Leeuwarden. His ambition was rewarded, for the cabinet was purchased by King William II, who had become a fan of the Gothic Revival style while studying in England. Hillebrand ingeniously combined a range of Gothic elements in the piece, such as the fine wood tracery over the mirror glass and the decorative spires or pinnacles.
