Gown with tiny dots, anonymous, c. 1810 - c. 1815

silk, l 128.5cm More details

After the French Revolution (1789), floral motifs fell out of fashion, giving way to stripes and dots. Gowns came to be decorated with strips of gathered and pleated fabric, often in a different material or contrasting colour. The edges of the contrasting strips of this dress were seared with a red-hot, lightly serrated knife or scissors to prevent the silk from fraying.
