Tile panel with a Chinese landscape, anonymous, c. 1700

earthenware, h 171.3cm × w 79.9cm × d 4.5cm More details

This tile panel was probably part of a wall covering in a room in a palace. The decoration is remarkably bold. The figure of Guanyin (a Buddhist deity) at the upper right is based directly on a Chinese woodcut. The striking black figures represent Brazilian Indians and were added to make the scene more exotic.
