Holy Family, Jan van Doorne (III), c. 1640 - c. 1650
Here we see Joseph, the Virgin and their child, Jesus, on their return journey from Egypt. Yet this representation of the Holy Family lacks a religious dimension. The virtuoso miniature carving was made from the start for an art lover, and not as devotional art. The three figures have little glass eyes that subtly reflect the light, lending the group even greater liveliness.
