Dutch craftsmen not only imitated the actual porcelain of Asia, but also used book illustrations as models for depictions in an Asian style. These prints were often adapted to conform to Western taste. The acrobats in this plaque are based on an illustration in Nieuhof’s travel account. The exotic travelling acrobats spoke to the imagination in the West.
