Crucifix, anoniem, c. 1260

notenhout met resten van polychromie, h 104.0cm. More details

The theme of Christ dying on the cross originated just before the year 1000. Until then, theologians had argued at great length about whether Christ died as a man or as a god. This early statue emphasizes the human aspect of Christ’s suffering through his closed eyes, his drooping head and, above all, his bleeding wounds.
