Lidded vase

anonymous, c. 1670 - c. 1680

In the first decades of his reign, which began in 1641, Louis XIV had many silver furnishings and large decorative objects made for the state apartments at Versailles. In 1689 the objects were all melted down to fund the wars that the king was waging. This vase, which was probably made in England, gives an idea of the splendour of the Sun King’s court.
