Plaque with the Raising of Lazarus, attributed to Jean Penicaud (I), c. 1500 - c. 1525
Enamel is a mixture of molten glass that is applied to a metal support. Here the copper plate is provided with a layer of silver, which heightens the luminosity of the translucent enamel colour. Lazarus was brought back to life by Christ four days after his death. The onlookers hold their noses against the 0smell of his decomposing body.
