Various European princes created treasure cabinets as a means of displaying their knowledge, wealth and power. These goblets were prominent display pieces in the Kunstkammer created in Dresden in 1560 by Augustus I, Elector of Saxony (1526–1586). During his lifetime, he assembled a major collection of close to forty vases with a value of 12,000 thaler (26,000 guilders).
