Man’s jacket

anonymous, 1920 - 1940

The outside of a formal man’s jacket was always black, but the inside could be embellished as one wished. The owner of this jacket chose a classic Japanese motif: a tiger near bamboo. Hidden behind the front panel is a crescent moon. The nocturnal light suggested by the background’s silvery sheen turns the bamboo leaves a dark green.
