Sound played a key role in the ancient Buddhist communities of Java. When a monk passed by with one of these staffs, the nine rings would jingle. This purifying sound was also meant to encourage people to contribute alms. Buddhist priests would use bells to exorcise evil spirits and to appeal to the gods.
