Shiva
anonymous, 1450
Shiva. Indonesia, East Java, late Mojopahit period. Second half of 15th century. Volcanic stone (andesite). In two of his hands the deity holds a rosary and a fly-whisk: attributes of the god Shiva. The meaning of the gesture he is making with his two foremost hands is unknown. The deity stands straight-backed and rigid. Bedecked in jewellery, he sports a moustache and goatee beard. The figure is relatively small. These characteristics are all typical of statues of the late Mojopahit period.
