Fox in Women’s Clothing

Shibata Gito, c. 1800 - c. 1819

In Japan, foxes have traditionally been attributed spiritual powers. Consequently, there are many Japanese legends about foxes assuming the form of a human. Gito worked out the upper part of the figure, but used only a few lines for the legs to indicate the fleeting nature of the apparition.
