Japanese paintings often depict a specific seasonal moment. The cherry blossoms on the snow-covered prunus branches at right show that the worst of the winter cold is over. The left-hand screen has springflowering plants, which together with the new green shoots of the willow tree signal the arrival of spring. These screens would have been used for only short periods, in that moment of the year.
