Serving tray, Rokkaku Shisui, c. 1910 - c. 1940

wood (plant material), d 26.2cm × h 3.1cm More details

In his desire to innovate, Shisui experimented with pigments, which ultimately led to the exuberant use of colour so characteristic of 20th-century Japanese lacquer. This restrained serving tray stands at the beginning of this quest. With subtle shades of green the artist has here created an almost palpable underwater scene.
